Why go there?

Sail into Gialos harbor on Symi to admire one of the most breathtaking views in the Mediterranean—a vast natural amphitheater lined with colorful, pastel-painted neoclassical mansions. Cruise southwest to Nisyros, where you can take an onshore excursion directly into the steaming crater floor of an active volcano. Visit the peaceful, eco-friendly island of Tilos to explore its quiet bays, or drop anchor off Halki to admire its serene, picture-perfect waterfront.

Your Charter may coincide with these events:

  • Symi Festival (July to September): A major cultural festival offering classical concerts, traditional Greek music, and open-air theater performances in Gialos.
  • Panagia Spiliani Celebrations (Nisyros - August 15th): A famous pilgrimage feast centered at the hilltop monastery overlooking Mandraki port.
  • Panigiri of Agios Panteleimon (Tilos - July 26th–27th): A vibrant traditional island festival hosted at the mountain monastery of Tilos.

How to get there?

The North Dodecanese islands do not have international airports, preserving their quiet charm:

  • Via Rhodes or Kos Airports: Fly into Rhodes International Airport (RHO) or Kos International Airport (KGS), both of which feature extensive international connections.
  • Ferry Connections: High-speed catamarans regularly connect Rhodes and Kos to Symi, Nisyros, Tilos, and Halki.

Approaching by yacht

Cruising the South Dodecanese presents rewarding, wind-driven passages. The Meltemi blows steadily from the northwest during summer. Symi features deep, sheltered bays like Panormitis on its southern tip, providing complete protection from all wind directions. Navigating into Nisyros’s main port of Pali requires monitoring wind direction, as northerly winds can generate swells near the harbor entrance.

Marina facilities

The region relies on traditional town quays and scenic anchorages:

  • Symi Port (Gialos) & Panormitis Bay:
    • Services: Gialos offers quayside mooring with water, electricity, and fuel delivery. Panormitis offers a massive natural bay with safe anchoring and quay space near the monastery.
    • Capacity: Gialos is extremely busy; boats frequently anchor-stern-to or cross-anchor due to deep water.
  • Pali Port (Nisyros):
    • Services: A modern, sheltered fishing harbor offering quayside berths with water, power, and fuel delivery.
    • Capacity: Good berth availability; an excellent base for hiring a scooter or bus up to the volcanic crater.
  • Nimborio (Halki) & Livadia (Tilos):
    • Services: Town quays offering basic water, electricity, and cozy waterfront tavernas.
    • Capacity: Moderate space; anchoring off with a dinghy ride to shore is common during high season.

What food to expect?

Southern Dodecanese gastronomy centers on unique seafood varieties and traditional sweets:

  • Symi Popcorn Shrimp: Famous tiny pan-fried red shrimp eaten whole, shells included.
  • Nisyros Soumada: A traditional, non-alcoholic sweet almond syrup drink served chilled.
  • Misokofti: A regional dessert made with boiled grape must and fresh prickly pear juice.

Provisioning advice:

  • Symi & Nisyros: Well-stocked mini-markets, bakeries, and wine shops are easily accessible near the ports of Gialos and Pali.
  • Halki & Tilos: Offer smaller grocery stores suitable for daily basics; major provisioning is best completed in Rhodes or Kos prior to departure.
