Harbour Island, Bahamas: A Chic Paradise for Yacht Charters

Nestled just off the coast of Eleuthera, Harbour Island is a vibrant jewel renowned for its iconic pink sand beaches, charming pastel-colored cottages, and upscale yet laid-back atmosphere. This exclusive island seamlessly blends historic Bahamian charm with boutique luxury, offering a sophisticated and picturesque setting for an unforgettable yacht charter in the Bahamas.

Why go there?

Harbour Island’s undeniable allure begins with its world-famous Pink Sand Beach, stretching for three miles and offering incredible snorkeling and swimming opportunities in its calm, clear waters. Explore the quaint streets of Dunmore Town, the island's only settlement, a designated historic district brimming with charming colonial architecture, boutique shops, and gourmet restaurants. Discover the hidden coves and pristine anchorages around the island, perfect for watersports. For a unique cultural experience, visit during the North Eleuthera Annual Sailing Regatta in June, which often spills over to Harbour Island, featuring lively races, local food, and celebrations. Art enthusiasts might also find local exhibitions or cultural events throughout the year, particularly during peak season.

How to get there?

Harbour Island itself does not have an airport capable of handling scheduled commercial flights. The main airport for accessing Harbour Island is North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), located on Eleuthera. Scheduled flights arrive from Nassau, operated by Bahamasair and Southern Air, as well as from several US cities (e.g., Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta) with airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and Silver Airways. From ELH, it's a short taxi ride to the ferry dock, followed by a quick water taxi across to Harbour Island.

For those chartering from Nassau, the three largest marinas to set out from are:

  • Nassau Yacht Haven: The largest and oldest continuously operating marina, accommodating vessels up to 220 feet.
  • Palm Cay Marina/One Marina: A popular charter base with resort amenities.
  • Bay Street Marina: Another well-established option in Nassau.

The sailing distance from Nassau to Harbour Island is approximately 50-60 nautical miles, making it a very popular and accessible charter destination from the capital. For those flying into Freeport International Airport (FPO) on Grand Bahama, the sailing distance to Harbour Island is significantly further, typically over 200 nautical miles, making it a less common starting point for direct Harbour Island charters. Marinas in Freeport include Port Lucaya Marina and Grand Bahama Yacht Club.

Marina facilities:

Harbour Island boasts excellent marina facilities, catering to a range of yachts, including superyachts.

  • Romora Bay Resort & Marina: A full-service marina offering fuel, water, power (up to 100 amp), a restaurant, pool, and accommodations. It can accommodate vessels up to around 190 feet.
  • Valentine's Resort & Marina: Another premier marina with fuel, water, power, laundry, showers, a dive shop, and several restaurants. It accommodates yachts up to approximately 160 feet.
  • Government Dock (Dunmore Town): While not a full-service marina, it's a popular public dock for dinghy access to town and offers some short-term mooring options for smaller vessels.

All main marinas provide comprehensive services, including customs and immigration clearance, making them convenient points of entry and stay for charter yachts.

What food to expect?

Harbour Island's culinary scene is surprisingly diverse and sophisticated for a small Out Island, ranging from casual local eateries to upscale fine dining. Freshly caught seafood is a highlight, with lobster (in season), grouper, and snapper featuring prominently. You'll find delicious conch prepared in all its forms – cracked, fried, salad, and fritters. Unique local flavors include grits, often served with breakfast or savory dishes, and vibrant tropical fruits. Given its upscale appeal, many restaurants offer international cuisine with a Bahamian twist, and wine lists are generally more extensive than on other Out Islands. Many of the island's top restaurants are located along the waterfront or within easy dinghy access from the main marinas, offering stunning views and a high-quality dining experience that balances fresh local ingredients with refined preparation.

Provisioning advice:

Harbour Island has several well-stocked grocery stores, particularly in Dunmore Town, offering a decent range of provisions, fresh produce, and some specialty items. While prices can be higher than in Nassau, the availability is generally good for a small island. There are also local fishermen who sell their fresh catch directly. For very specific or large-scale provisioning needs, especially for longer charters, it is still advisable to do the bulk of your shopping in Nassau before arriving. However, for top-ups, fresh seafood, and common items, Harbour Island's local stores are quite accessible and convenient for charterers.
