Eleuthera: Pink Sands and Endless Horizons

Discover Eleuthera, a slender, enchanting island in the Bahamas, stretching over 110 miles with dramatic cliffs, secluded pink sand beaches, and world-class surfing waves. Explore charming settlements, wander through pineapple fields, and marvel at the unique Glass Window Bridge. For adventurous charterers seeking diverse landscapes and authentic Bahamian culture, Eleuthera offers an unparalleled yachting experience.

Why Go There:

Eleuthera presents a captivating tapestry of natural wonders and authentic island life. Cruise along its diverse coastline, from the dramatic Atlantic side with crashing waves to the tranquil Caribbean side with calm, shallow waters perfect for snorkeling. Anchor off the famous Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island (easily accessible from northern Eleuthera) and stroll along its unique rosy shores. Explore the intriguing Hatchet Bay Caves near Gregory Town or witness the natural bridge at the Glass Window, where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet. For surfing enthusiasts, Surfer's Beach near Gregory Town offers excellent breaks. Don't miss the annual Pineapple Festival in Gregory Town, typically held in early June, celebrating the island's agricultural heritage with food, music, and cultural events. Discover the quaint charm of Governor's Harbour, the island's historic capital.

How to Get There:

Eleuthera is served by three airports:

  • North Eleuthera Airport (ELH): Located near Spanish Wells and Harbour Island, with scheduled flights primarily from Florida (USA) and Nassau with airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Silver Airways, and Bahamasair.
  • Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB): Situated in the central part of the island, receiving flights mainly from Florida (USA) and Nassau on airlines like American Airlines, Silver Airways, and Bahamasair.
  • Rock Sound International Airport (RSD): Located in the south, with fewer international flights but connections from Nassau via Bahamasair.

For those chartering from Nassau, the three largest marinas are:

  • Atlantis Marina: Located on Paradise Island.
  • Albany Marina: Situated west of Nassau.
  • Bay Street Marina: Found in downtown Nassau.

The sailing distance to northern Eleuthera (Spanish Wells/Harbour Island) is approximately 50-60 nautical miles (estimated sailing time: 7-12 hours at an average of 5-7 knots). The distance to central Eleuthera (Governor's Harbour) is around 70-80 nautical miles (estimated sailing time: 10-16 hours at an average of 5-7 knots), and to southern Eleuthera (Rock Sound) is approximately 90-100 nautical miles (estimated sailing time: 13-20 hours at an average of 5-7 knots).

Sailing directly from Freeport to Eleuthera is a longer passage we do not recommend unless you enjoy long crossings. The distances range from 150-200 nautical miles (estimated sailing time: 21-40 hours at an average of 7-5 knots) depending on the specific destination within Eleuthera. It's more common for charters to originate in Nassau or directly in Eleuthera.

Marina Facilities:

Eleuthera offers a selection of marinas, varying in size and amenities:

  • Romora Bay Resort & Marina (Harbour Island): A well-regarded marina offering a full range of services, including fuel, water, electricity, showers, laundry, and restaurant access. Accommodates large yachts.
  • Valentines Residences Resort & Marina (Harbour Island): Provides similar high-end amenities and can accommodate sizable vessels.
  • Spanish Wells Yacht Haven (Spanish Wells): Offers essential services and dockage for various yacht sizes.
  • Cape Eleuthera Marina (South Eleuthera): A full-service marina in a more remote location, capable of handling larger yachts and offering comprehensive amenities.
  • Smaller docks and moorings are also available in settlements like Governor's Harbour and Gregory Town, often with more limited services.

What Food to Expect:

Eleutheran cuisine, like the rest of the Bahamas, heavily features fresh seafood. Look out for delicious preparations of conch, including conch fritters, cracked conch, and conch salad. Freshly caught grouper, snapper, and mahi-mahi are staples, often grilled or pan-fried. Be sure to try the local Bahamian stew fish and the ubiquitous peas 'n' rice. Given Eleuthera's history as a pineapple-growing region, fresh pineapple and pineapple-based dishes are particularly popular, especially around the time of the Pineapple Festival.

Many charming waterfront restaurants are accessible by dinghy in settlements like Harbour Island, Spanish Wells, and Governor's Harbour, offering fresh seafood and local specialties with beautiful views. Quality can vary, but generally, the focus is on fresh ingredients and traditional Bahamian flavors. Provisions and fresh foods can be purchased in grocery stores in the main settlements. Harbour Island and Governor's Harbour have a good selection, while smaller settlements may have more limited options.

Provisioning:

For provisioning your yacht in Eleuthera, it's advisable to plan based on your itinerary. Harbour Island offers a good selection of well-stocked grocery stores to cater to the yachting community. Governor's Harbour also has reasonably sized supermarkets. Spanish Wells provides further provisioning options.

Smaller settlements along Eleuthera may have very limited grocery options, primarily catering to basic local needs. Therefore, it is recommended to do your primary stock-up in either Harbour Island or Governor's Harbour at the beginning of your Eleuthera exploration. You can easily take a taxi from the marinas or airports in these locations to the grocery stores.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, including locally grown pineapples when in season, can be found in these main settlements. Remember to consider the distances between settlements and plan your provisioning accordingly, especially if you intend to spend extended time in the more remote southern parts of Eleuthera. Stocking up on essentials like water and non-perishables in the larger centers is recommended for a smoother charter experience.
